The series is known for its thrilling action sequences, exotic locations, and its strong and determined female lead. The franchise has had two adaptations, both starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, the first one was released in 2001 and the second in 2003. The series follows the story of Lara Croft, a skilled and independent adventurer, who travels the world in search of ancient artifacts and hidden treasures while trying to uncover the truth behind her father’s disappearance. She and the video game level system were the shining points in this movie that faithfully adapted the feel of a video game more than a coherent story from one.The Tomb Raider movies in order are a popular action-adventure film series based on the video game series of the same name. I just wish the film she had been set in would’ve been better. I don’t think Jolie’s Croft could exist in todays world for obvious reasons but she actually delivered a good version of the character. Yes, the Tomb Raider games had some mystical moments but the CGI monsters here looked bad and really didn’t add anything to the story. His horrible American accent mixed with his characters one-dimensional writing made me keep asking: “why is he here again?” I think some moments with his character could’ve had a lot more punch in the finale had he had more than a shower scene or two and a scene yelling in a jungle while Lara corrected his every guess. I think I would have more problems with the over-sexualization of the character if they didn’t also make a pretty great effort of continually reminding us that not only is the best looking one in the room but the smartest, strongest, and best written too.ĭaniel Craig has clearly improved as an actor since this films release. The villains could’ve killed her like 20 times but kept pulling back.Īngelina Jolie was pretty great as Lara and was the obvious highlight of this weird film. It was when they started showing up that the movie seemed to have no stakes. The first half was much better than the second because they weren’t there. This movie worked best when it was Lara raiding tombs… who’d have thunk? So many scenes cut between Lara and the villains and the villains were useless. The artifact itself doesn’t really make sense even after they show it’s use in a weirdly sci-fi finale. The connections between each scene are loose at best and no clear direction is ever provided. The actual quest and set pieces feel very disjointed and chaotic but the actual scenes in and on them are fun. This movie gets all of these things right but its story is so chaotic and has so many one dimensional characters that it feels like Lara is essentially on a raid alone. Lara Croft is actually a pretty well made character, the only problem is she is the only one in a nonsensical movie. However, if you haven't seen a movie in a very long time and are re-discovering it then exceptions may be made.Ī video game movie that actually feels like a video game until the parts where it tries to take itself too seriously.
